Morgellons Disease Research Library
A focused research page for published papers, case reports, filament studies, spirochetal association papers, clinical evaluations, and balanced discussion of differential diagnosis.
Educational information only. These papers help organize the discussion, but they do not replace evaluation by a licensed clinician.

Morgellons Disease Research Papers
The following sources directly address Morgellons disease, cutaneous filaments, Borrelia or spirochetal associations, clinical evaluation, differential diagnosis, or related dermatological questions. The library also includes major contrasting studies that have shaped mainstream clinical interpretation of Morgellons. Most are peer-reviewed; one recent entry is a preprint and is clearly marked as not yet peer-reviewed.

Metagenomics Reveals a Phylogenetically Informed Microbial Signature Associated with Morgellons Disease
Deep metagenomic sequencing comparing lesions to unaffected skin across a five-person family cohort (Lambert & Kindschuh). It reports a microbial signature associated with lesions and sequences poorly represented in existing databases. Preprint — not yet peer-reviewed, and based on a single small family cohort.

Major Studies and Contrasting Interpretations
Morgellons remains scientifically and clinically disputed. A useful research library should not hide the studies that shaped mainstream medical interpretation, nor should it treat unanswered questions as settled. The papers below represent two important perspectives in that debate.

Clinical, Epidemiologic, Histopathologic and Molecular Features of an Unexplained Dermopathy
Pearson et al. investigated 115 case-patients identified through Kaiser Permanente Northern California. The study documented substantial impairment in health-related quality of life but did not identify a common underlying medical condition or infectious source. Most materials collected from participants’ skin were composed of cellulose, likely of cotton origin. This 2012 investigation remains central to the mainstream interpretation of Morgellons.

Reframing Delusional Infestation: Perspectives on Unresolved Puzzles
Lai et al. review unresolved questions surrounding delusional infestation and Morgellons disease, including real versus perceived infestation, self-inflicted trauma, neuroimaging and neurotransmitter findings, and impaired insight. The authors describe the underlying etiology of delusional infestation as unclear and propose a multifactorial approach to the final diagnosis of DI and Morgellons disease.
Why the disagreement matters: These studies do not necessarily begin with identical definitions of the patient population or the same specimen question. The Pearson investigation used a broad case definition based on reported fibers or other materials plus skin lesions and/or disturbing skin sensations. Filament-focused Morgellons studies commonly define the condition by unusual filaments lying under, embedded in, or projecting from skin. Differences in case definition and specimen selection are therefore important when comparing apparently conflicting findings.
